When you can use your emergency heat (second stage) without your heat pump (1st-stage heat), it is called emergency heat. While different thermostats have different ways to determine when the second stage heat will come on to help the heat pump (or vice versa), it happens automatically. These two stages will work together in colder months and you don't need to change your thermostat to Emergency Heat.
